Legal protection for firearms officers

Question by Steve O'Connell

What representations have you, MOPAC and the Metropolitan Police Service made to the currently on-going Home Office review into the support provided for firearms officers?

Answer by Sadiq Khan

Commander Matt Twist and other senior members of the MPS have met with both the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) Lead for Firearms, Home Office & the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) to discuss this matter.

Both the Home Secretary and Minister for Policing have visited the MPS Specialist Training Centre in Gravesend and spoken with firearms officers first hand. This also enabled the MPS to demonstrate the difficulties facing firearms officers should they discharge their weapon in the course of their duty.

MOPAC will continue to work with the MPS as this review develops.
