Leave these vital facilities alone

Labour's plans to turn our libraries into community centres with no librarians and no library service is plain wrong. It will be the death knell of these seats of learning where young and old can go to study, read for leisure, or access IT.

As a kid from a council estate I benefitted enormously from a professional library service and to deprive our residents of these opportunities is unacceptable. From Coulsdon to Upper Norwood we must maintain a full library service. It is particularly a kick in the teeth for Upper Norwood joint library and those great people up there who have been fighting for it for years.

If elected in May I will be lobbying the new Mayor for a London-wide library fund which pays particular attention to cross-borough provision.

Tim Godfrey says we're in a new world. We should no part of a world that wrecks our libraries and deprives our children of opportunites to broaden their knowledge in an atmosphere of learning and professionalism.
